We stopped at a roadside cantina for lunch. We were met by a smiling older lady who cheerfully invited us in. She offered us piping hot bowls of fresh beef soup or Caldo de Res. Her smile as warm as her soup, and her kindness seemed to warm the souls as much as her soup nourished the belly.

My flight landed under a starry cloudless sky in Managua at 1:30 am on February 14. While waiting nervously for a customs official to look me over, a girl I befriended on the plane pointed at a poster advertising Fleur de Caña rum “You’ll be drinking a lot of that.”
